Frequently Asked Questions

Are you currently accepting new therapy clients in New York?

Yes. I am currently welcoming new adult clients for online telehealth therapy in New York. I work primarily with BIPOC and first-generation individuals, though all are welcome. My therapy approach is both culturally responsive and trauma-informed, ensuring a safe, collaborative, and empowering experience for every client.

What mental health concerns do you treat as a licensed psychologist in New York?

I specialize in helping adults with:
• Life transitions such as career changes, relocation, and identity shifts
• Parenting challenges and perinatal mental health support
• Healing from intergenerational trauma and racial trauma
• Anxiety, depression, and burnout recovery
• Building self-worth, confidence, and resilience

As a licensed psychologist in New York, I integrate evidence-based practices with an understanding of identity, culture, and lived experience.

Do you offer online or telehealth therapy in New York?

Yes. All therapy sessions are conducted via secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing. This allows you to access care from the comfort and privacy of your own space without the stress of travel. My virtual therapy services are available to adults physically located in New York at the time of the session.

How long are therapy sessions and how often will we meet?

Sessions are typically 45 minutes. Most clients meet weekly or bi-weekly, though we will determine a schedule that best fits your goals, needs, and availability.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a psychiatrist?

A licensed psychologist, like myself, has a doctoral degree in psychology and advanced training in evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and psychotherapy. Psychologists do not typically prescribe medication but often collaborate with medical providers.

The term therapist is broader and includes psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and other professionals trained to provide counseling.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in diagnosing mental health conditions and prescribing medication. Some psychiatrists also offer therapy, but their primary focus is on medication management.

How do I book an appointment for therapy in New York?

You can get started by contacting me through my Contact page or emailing me directly at ashleyrodriguezphd@gmail.com. We will schedule a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your needs, answer questions, and decide if working together is the right fit.

Do you offer reflective supervision or consultation for other mental health professionals?

Yes. I provide reflective supervision and consultation for trainees, early career clinicians, and organizations seeking to strengthen culturally attuned, trauma-informed care. My supervision approach focuses on building self-awareness, enhancing clinical skills, and supporting sustainable and equitable practices.
